The United States is defending President Donald Trump’s decision to invite Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte to the White House. The two presidents spoke by telephone on Saturday. Trump noted the need to strengthen an Asian alliance against the growing threat from North Korea’s military. He also spoke by phone on Sunday with Singapore’s prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, and Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha. The president also invited the two leaders to the White House. A White House statement described the discussions between the Philippines and U.S. presidents as very friendly. Trump told Duterte that he was interested in developing a warm, working relationship.
