Among today’s hottest selling personal technology devices are smart digital assistants for the home. Google Home, Amazon Echo and Apple HomePod are all artificial intelligence (AI)-powered systems that respond to voice commands. The systems connect to the internet to look up information, play music or movies, or control household devices. Now, researchers have developed the first AI assistant for use in space. European aerospace company Airbus cooperated with U.S.-based IBM on the system. It will be deployed to the International Space Station (ISS) during a mission in June. Airbus says it is the first time an AI system will be used aboard the ISS. The assistant is called CIMON, which stands for Crew Interactive Mobile Companion.
